I absolutely LOVE Frito bean dip. I grew up eating it and I still eat it to this day. With a can being $3 or more and small enough for one person to finish off in one sitting, I needed a better solution.
I checked out the ingredients on the back of the can and then I set out hoping to find a copycat with the same ingredients and that I did.
You can make this homemade version for a fraction of the cost and get twice as much. Think about it, a can of refried beans is less than $1, you probably already have the seasonings on hand and then the jar of jalapenos was under $2 and has enough to make 10 batches or so of bean dip. That is like a 1/3 of the cost and you get double the amount. Don't let the cayenne and jalapenos scare you, it is not spicy at all.
You can have a batch of this made in 30 seconds. Now, the only problem is practicing some serious self control knowing that I can make this is no-time-flat and that I almost always have the ingredients on hand.
As an added bonus, this recipe is much better for you than other dips with all the fiber and protein you will get from the beans.

1 (16 oz.) can refried beans
5 slices bottled jalapenos
1 1/2 Tbl. brine from bottled jalapenos
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 + 1/8 tsp. paprika
1/4 + 1/8 tsp. paprika
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
Combine all ingredients in the food processor and process until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with Fritos or Doritos.

DeleteThis is a yummy recipe, but I found it to be really salty. Maybe it was just the kind of jalapeno brine I used? I think next time I'm going to omit the 1/4 tsp salt and add it to taste after it's pureed. But thank you for the recipe!

DeleteI bought bean dip for my husband at the grocery store. It is a special treat for him. I got a can and thought..."Man that is a lot of money for a small can. I should see if I can find the recipe." Pinterest popped into my head, here I am. I tried it right away and voila...homemade awesomeness. The best part the hubs loved it. Deleteoh no, I'm in trouble!!!! I can polish off one of those little Frito cans in one sitting. I just made a double batch of this with half regular refried beans, and half black refried beans. It is AMAZING!

DeleteMaryn did you make the black bean refrito? They have a firmer skin than pinto beans and are a preferred side dish for me. The texture (pop!) adds to the experience! A good mix, will try myself. Plus the color will be cool! P.S. Few men seem involved here. I suspect some of the anonymous replies are male. I don't cook much but what I do blows people away. Can't wait to see Jenn's recipe for Rotel Velveeta Queso dip. I have a Chili Con Queso that may be fun to try. Can't go wrong with Velveeta! 3rd gen USN/USMC and the few things I do cook ROCK! ReplyDeleteI'm a vegetaian and I like to use bean dip as a sandwich spread. I make deviled bean (instead of ham) and pickle sandwiches. Spread mayo on both sides of bread, spread bean dip on one side and lay some bread and butter pickle slices on top of that and cover with other slice of bread. Can't wait to make my own bean dip. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteSecond time I've made this, reduced brine to 1Tb and after tasting added slightly rounded 1/8 ts cumin.
Cumin really tastes good in it, maybe slightly less than 1/8 ts would be better.
